Despite being met by a wholehearted “meh” by the blogging collective when it was announced, Apple’s back-to-school promotion appears to being crushing the competition in education sales.
According to Trip Chowdhry, a Global Equities Research analyst, sales of Apple’s Macs have been outselling Windows PCs stating nearly “80% of incoming students are buying Apple Computers vs. Windowns Computers.”
When Apple announced it would offer a $100 iTunes store credit to students it was implied that the credit would be used towards apps. Most are buying songs. The youth know not what they possess.
While Apple has been sucking market share up on college campuses across the country, it seems Fortune 500 companies are following suit as well. Chowdrhy reports that nearly 35% of Fortune 500 companies are offering Apple computers as a choice to their workers “and the majority are preferring Apple over Windows.”
However, I would imagine a number of those enterprise Macs are running Windows 7 via bootcamp or some sort of parallels software to use Windows.

Leading into this weekend, reports surfaced yet again that Apple is supposedly prepping HD movies for availability through iTunes beginning this fall. Speculation surfaced following earlier reports that various entertainment industry giants – including movie studios and TV production companies – are now providing Apple with content in a new and higher-resolution HD format.
Presently, the best quality Apple can offer via iTunes comes in at 720p (1280×720). Clearly, if Apple wants to better compete with the multitude of HD streaming and on-demand video services that will soon flood every nook and cranny of the home entertainment market, the move makes sense.
So, consequently, not withstanding the reports we’re hearing around the blogosphere, perhaps the greatest “evidence” that Apple is going into 1080p HD territory is that it basically has to in order to keep pace with the rest of the industry. And based on the chatter I’ve heard and the sources I’ve connected with, Apple may be ready for this rumored upgrade before the summer comes to a close.
Of course, while everyone is looking to iTunes for the platform that will deliver the higher-res content, let’s not forget about the prospect of a 1080p-ready Apple TV, which, to be perfectly honest, may be something we get before the iPad 3.

JailBreakMe 3.0s release is probably the easiest way to jailbreak an iDevice, and the first to allow the iPad 2 to be jailbroken. I suppose then it was only a matter of time before someone was able to jailbreak one of Apple’s iPad 2 in-store displays.
One of 9to5Mac‘s readers was able to bypass the smart sign display application using the secret gestures that aren’t so secret. Once the user bypassed the smart sign display application they were able to jailbreak the iPad 2 via mobile Safari using JailbreakMe 3.0. Apple already confirmed earlier this week they would be patching the PDF exploit JailbreakMe 3.0 uses in the next update of iOS.
My question then is this. How many of these display iPad 2′s will Jon Q Public Jailbreak before Apple updates iOS and kills the dream forever?

MIT researchers have developed a device that uses LCD screens to test for cataracts, the leading cause of blindes in the world.
The snap-on eyepiece the researchers developed can effectively be attached to any small LCD screen, and “projects time-dependent patterns onto the fovea.” Because a cataract eye refracts light before it reaches the retina, they are able to measure and compare a good light path with a bad light path, and even estimate the cataracts size, postion, density and scattering profile using the accompanying software.
This seems infinitely simpler than the standard cataract test patients receive when they go to an optometrist. You know the drill, dialating eyedrops, keep your eye open as long as possible while the blue light tube thing is stuck as close as possible so it can check density, and then go blind because your forgot your sunglasses and refuse to wear the ridiculously cheap ones the office gives you.
It seems the attachment, and the software obtains more information than the traditional procedure. A good example of another highly portable, extremely affordable, and intuitive solution to a problem, made possible by advancements in technology. I wonder how optometrists and other eye specialists will feel about the expensive and extensive testing needed to detect cataracts becoming obsolete?

Talk about a sweet iPod touch refresh. If sources contributing to the popular Dutch AppleSpot.nl blog are correct, this fall Apple may roll out a fifth-generation iPod touch that delivers 3G data connectivity. That is, the next-gen iPod touch (or at least one model of the refreshed device) may serve up the iPad’s Wi-Fi or 3G options.
Now, there’s an old saying in journalism which contends that a rumor can make it all the way around the world before the truth can even put its pants on. For now, this is clearly a rumor from a far-removed news source, yet one that is getting attention from almost every corner of the tech blogosphere.
Still, rumor aside, the concept presented in the blog is worth noting. Even if today’s report is a full-fledged rumor, the underlying suggestion – that the next iPod touch may sport 3G connectivity – could very well still manifest in a refreshed product this fall, especially since the upgrade seems logical enough. In fact, it’s unlikely anyone would be totally shocked by that very development, as many believe it is long overdue.
Of course, what remains to be seen is if the revamp will revitalize iPod touch sales. If not consumers, the addition of 3G connectivity will certainly please Apple’s carrier partners, as the iPod touch on 3G could conceivably help generate substantial new revenue streams via an established, popular product in the Apple family.
